I. Discussing Our Diversity
Neighborhoods, towns, cities, corporations, health care organizations, educational institutions and other employers and organizations recognize the need to have conversations on what can be a difficult topic: our racial and ethnic diversity. But these conversations can be had, respectfully yet honestly, allowing people to express, hear and learn in ways they may never have found possible in a mixed group. Good planning and skilled facilitation are the keys.

Many communities are changing demographically and would like to find ways to be inclusive and welcoming to residents of all ethnic and racial groups - both newer ones and those groups that are long-established. Facilitated focus groups and dialogues can help.
II. Police-Community Relations
Whether in neighborhoods affected by violence, communities with newly diverse populations or towns with resident-police misunderstanding, community-police dialogues can dramatically improve communication, mutual respect understanding and trust between police officers and residents. Using groundrules for respectful dialogue, we are able to humanize police officers and residents to each other, helping them realize they can be allies in keeping their communities safer.

III. Health Care - Beyond Cultural Competence: the "3 Rs"
Structured dialogue among selected combinations of providers, administrators, policymakers, insurers, educators, researchers, employers and consumers of health care can advance the process of heightening awareness of disparities and other racial and ethnic issues, motivating people toward beneficial action. Delivery systems in which providers of health and social services have embraced best practices in culturally competent care can further improve outcomes by focusing on the "Three Rs": Rapport, Respect and Relationships. Effective inclusion of input from all relevant stakeholders also enhances prospects for successful health care reform models.
In diversity-related projects, paying attention at the outset to relationship-building can improve results. It pays to first provide project participants with sufficient time and a safe space to engage on a personal level, leading to the stage of focusing on the project itself. Civic Dialogue Services facilitators enable participants to build relationships and enhance the effectiveness of their efforts.
IV. Civic Engagement
Cities and towns may seek to build "social capital," getting more residents involved in the many activities that exist and creating a stronger sense of a shared community. Focus groups, public forums, community dialogues and workshops on forming neighborhood associations are tools that Civic Dialogue Services offers to community organizers.
